FIRST SCHOLARSHIP FROM WAR MEMORIAL FUND IN 2008
The first Old Shebbearian War Memorial Scholarship will be made
in 2008 to a boy or girl from one of 20 or so primary schools in
the Shebbear area, the Trustees have announced..
It will enable that pupil, aged 10 or 11, to attend Shebbear
College for a period of up to seven years at no expense to his or
her parents.
The relaunched OS War Memorial Fund will contribute £3,000
a year to the cost of the scholarship – the balance of
between £5,000 and £,6,000 will be provided through the
generosity of the college.
Primary schools will be invited in September 2007 to nominate a
pupil. An announcement on the child who has been successful will be
made in the spring or early summer of 2008. Only boys and girls
whose parents’ incomes is such that they would never be in a
position to contemplate sending their children to the school will
be eligible.
David Shorney, the Fund’s Honorary Treasurer, said:
“Had it not been for the generosity of almost 50 Old
Shebbearians , there would have been scholarship to be
awarded.
“Nor would it have been possible had the school not been
prepared to make up the shortfall.”
The school was prepared to do this on the understanding that the
OSA would continue its efforts to persuade more former pupils to
contribute to the fund on an annual basis.
He added: “At the present time twenty four former pupils are
giving just under two thousand pounds a year by standing
order.
“Thanks to the generosity of another twenty four, we have
been able to invest in a Chaibond which provides us with an
additional income of three hundred pounds a year. “Coupled
with Gift Aid and the income we receive from our long-standing
investments we now have an income of about three thousand a
year.”
* It is essential that the Fund, commemorating the sacrifices of 85
Old Shebbearians who gave their lives in two World Wars, and one
who died on active service in 1963, is refreshed and enlarged
regularly.
Standing Orders and Gift Aid forms are available from David
Shorney, 81 Tarnwood Park, London SE9 5PD, or from the OSA Honorary
Secretary, David Haley, Cold Norton Farm, Ockham Lane, Cobham,
